Job Opportunities

Once you obtained a degree in information technology, you are almost certain of various job opportunities and interesting career perspectives. It will be much less a matter whether you will find a job, but more whether you will find a job that matches your interests.

All major challenges in science and technology in the current century are multidisciplinary in nature; i.e. several disciplines must bond together to create inspiring environments. Computer scientists play a pivotal role: they collect and organise the data to ensure that the numerous software systems, networks, algorithms can exchange information seamlessly.

The modern economy with its emphasis on global competition and sustainable development poses interesting challenges for computer scientists. New industrial systems, implementation and optimisation of specialised software, networks with higher performance and security, faster computation cycles — these all present opportunities for young computer scientists.

8 Career Paths for CSE / IT - The choice is yours

1. Software Developer, Web Developer, Video Game Developer, Mobile App Developer

Developers in computer science are the people who design computer programmes. The type of work depends on the nature of the product being developed. A Video Game Developer will collaborate with design teams to write the source code to make the game run as it’s supposed to. Web Developers produce the layout and functionality of web pages. As a Mobile App developer or Software Developer, you’ll have to be knowledgeable about the type of programme you’re writing, and proficient in using code to deliver the desired result.

Software Developer & Engineering:

Key Skills: Programming languages: Java, Python, Pandas, JavaScript, Microsoft Azure, Oracle SQL Plus. Technical Knowledge: Data structures, algorithms, databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud computing (AWS/Azure).

Potential Job Titles: Software Engineer / Developer, Systems Programmer / Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Backend Developer and QA Engineer/Tester.

Web Developer:

Key Skills: Front-End: Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.js. Back-End: Knowledge of server-side languages (Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP) and database management.

Potential Job Titles: Front-end Developer, Full Stack Developer, Web Application Developer, WordPress Developer / CMS Specialist and JavaScript Developer (or specific framework, e.g., React/Angular Developer).

Mobile App Developer:

Key Skills: Languages: Proficiency in Swift/Objective-C (iOS) or Kotlin/Java (Android). Frameworks: Knowledge of cross-platform frameworks like Flutter, React Native, or Xamarin.

Video Game Developer:

Key Skills: Languages & Engines: Proficiency in C++ or C# and game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. Game Specifics: Knowledge of 2D/3D modeling, animation, physics engines, and graphics programming (OpenGL/DirectX).

2. Algorithm Developer

Unlike other web and computer programmer roles, algorithm developers always focus on functionality. An algorithm developer works on designing and implementing algorithms and is focused on solving a problem. Their job is one of the most technical and exacting in computer science, coming up with the best code solutions to make a product work. Solve the equations and write the code that gives the application or product its instructions to function. They are problem-solving specialists who create the “brain” of software applications.

Key Skills: Programming Languages: Proficiency in high-level languages like Python, C++, and Java is standard. Python is preferred for AI/ML due to its library ecosystem, while C++ is essential for performance-critical systems like medical equipment or gaming. Data Structures & Algorithms (DSA): Expertise in organizing data (arrays, linked lists, trees, graphs) and applying techniques such as divide & conquer, greedy algorithms, dynamic programming, backtracking, and heuristics.

Potential Workplaces: Technology companies (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, etc.), Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning startups, Finance and investment firms (for algorithmic trading), Research institutions and universities, Defense and aerospace organizations, Robotics and automation companies…

3. Cybersecurity

The role in securing digital infrastructure becomes increasingly pivotal as organizations around the world grapple with the escalating threat of cyber-attacks. Pursuing a career in cybersecurity, one of the fastest growing fields, offers a diverse range of opportunities, from ethical hacking and penetration testing to risk analysis and security consulting. As a cybersecurity professional, one might be tasked with implementing robust defense mechanisms, investigating security incidents, and devising strategies to safeguard sensitive data.

Key Skills: Programming and scripting languages: JavaScript, Python, C++, and SQL. Network Security: network protocols, VPNs, firewalls, and secure architecture (segmentation, DMZ). Operating Systems & Cloud: In-depth knowledge of Linux/Windows hardening and securing cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).

Potential Job Titles: Chief Information Officer (CIO), Security Engineer, Cybersecurity Analyst, Information Security Analyst, Digital Forensics Analyst and more.

4. Data Science and Analytics

As all organizations increasingly recognize the value of the data available to us, IT skills are required to harness the vast amounts of information to pinpoint meaningful insights and drive more informed decision-making across all businesses. IT professionals are responsible for creating and maintaining integrated data infrastructure, ensuring the security and accuracy of that data, and implementing analytics solutions to make sense of the data.

Key Skills: Programming Languages: Python, R, and SQL. Data Visualization Tools: Tableau and Power BI. Statistical Analysis: hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and probability. Cloud Computing: AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Handling Big Data: Apache Hadoop and Spark.

5. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)

Create algorithms and models to predict future business performance, powering machine learning processes. This requires a profound understanding of IT principles, programming languages and complex AI and ML applications.

Key Skills: Programming Languages: Python is dominant, with support from C++, Java, and R. AI/ML Frameworks & Libraries: expertise in PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, and Keras. Data Handling/Analysis: skills in SQL, Pandas, and NumPy for manipulating data and managing unstructured datasets. Machine Learning Algorithms: knowledge of supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning, including decision trees and neural networks.

Potential Job Titles: AI engineer, machine learning engineer, natural language processing developer and computer vision engineer.

6. Software development and user experience (UX) / User interface (UI) design

Think about your favourite apps on your phone that you use every day. Information technology contributes to the entire lifecycle of those apps, from coding and testing to deploying and maintenance. IT professionals work closely with user experience (UX) designers to ensure that software applications meet functional requirements but also deliver seamless and intuitive experiences for the user. A great user experience is one of the key factors that influence how customers perceive a company & can significantly impact the company's brand.

Key Skills: Front-End Development: Strong coding skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. UX designer tools: Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, InVision studio, Proto.io and Axure for prototypes and wireframes. Adobe Photoshop is a well-liked tool for interface design

Potential Job Titles: UX/UI designer, DevOps engineer, interaction designer, user experience researcher, information architect, product designer, communication designer and information designer

7. Digital marketing and e-commerce

In the world of digital marketing and e-commerce, IT professionals play a key role in optimizing user experiences across platforms, from phone to web to app, ensuring a seamless connection across online platforms. From creating websites and mobile apps to implementing data analytics to capture data and sales, these roles demand a combination of technical skills and an understanding of digital trends and user behavior.

Key Skills: Data analytics tools: Google Analytics, Semrush, Mixpanel, Tableau, and Mailchimp. Search engine optimization / marketing tools: Google Analytics, Google Search Console, Shopify, Ahrefs, Moz, SEMrush. Customer relationship management tools: Hubspot, Salesforce, Zoho CRM, SugarCRM, Oracle CX, ActiveCampaign, Agile CRM, Mailchimp, Insightly and Intercom. Conversion rate optimization tools: Google Analytics (and GA 360), Adobe Analytics, Crazy Egg, FullStory, Google Optimize, Optimizely, HubSpot and HelloBar.

8. Cloud Engineer

Cloud computing is changing the future of business. As organisations put so much data through the cloud, those who can design, deploy, and maintain efficient cloud infrastructures will be in high demand. Cloud Engineer is a broad term, but it can refer to anyone who programmes code for cloud structures, implements applications through the cloud, or supports those systems.

Key Skills: Cloud Platforms: Deep knowledge of at least one major provider (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure) is foundational, including services like EC2, S3, RDS, VPCs, and IAM. Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Proficiency in automating infrastructure provisioning using tools like Terraform, Ansible, or AWS CloudFormation. Programming & Scripting: Ability to write scripts to automate tasks, primarily using Python, or Bash, Java, or Ruby.

Potential Job Titles: cloud systems engineer, cloud network engineer, cloud security engineer, cloud devOps engineer and cloud solutions architect.
