Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man.

The Department of Civil Engineering (CE) was established in the year 2008 with the B.Tech program in Civil Engineering. Over the years, the department has expanded its academic activities, strengthened laboratory infrastructure, and enhanced its teaching–learning ecosystem to address the growing demands of the construction, infrastructure, environmental, and sustainability sectors. The department also offers an M.Tech program in Structural Engineering, started in 2014.

In alignment with national requirements and advancements in engineering education, the department focuses on emerging areas of Civil Engineering such as Smart Infrastructure, Sustainable Construction Materials, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Transportation Systems, and Geospatial Technologies.

The B.Tech program in Civil Engineering was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for three consecutive terms in 2016, 2019 and 2025, each for a duration of three years. The period of NBA accreditation validity for the B.Tech program in Civil Engineering (Tier-I – Washington Accord) is valid till 30 June, 2028.

The B.Tech in Civil Engineering at IARE provides students with a breadth of knowledge and a range of technical skills across theoretical and applied aspects of the discipline. The program covers not only traditional areas such as Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Hydraulics, Surveying, and Environmental Engineering, but also integrates evolving domains such as Smart Cities, Sustainable Infrastructure, and Construction Management. Students gain strong foundations and hands-on experience in design studios, surveying practice, material testing, structural analysis software, geotechnical investigations, and real-time project work.

The department has 8 academic laboratories such as Strength of Materials Laboratory, Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory, Concrete Technology Laboratory, Hydraulics & Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Surveying & Geomatics Laboratory, Transportation Laboratory, Advanced Concrete Technology Laboratory, Advanced CAD Laboratory. The infrastructure and lab facilities are upgraded from time to time and provide a good practical learning and innovative environment for the students and researchers.

The students are nurtured with a variety of active learning activities including and not restricted to classroom teaching, presentations, video lectures, MOOC courses, minor / honors courses, experiential learning (Exeed), and online courses delivered by faculty in the institute and across the globe.

Skills and Competences:

Considering the potential expertise, a Civil Engineering B.Tech graduate should have at least four or more of the following competences:

  • be aware of the tasks required for planning, designing, and developing civil engineering structures
  • apply practical engineering methods in materials testing, structural analysis, surveying, and construction
  • solve complex engineering problems using design codes, engineering methods, and engineering software tools
  • perform geotechnical investigations, environmental assessments, and construction quality checks
  • design and analyse concrete and steel structures using computational tools
  • plan, manage, and monitor construction activities and infrastructure projects
  • Provide solutions considering sustainability, resilience, climate change, and disaster risk
  • think logically, creatively, systematically
  • have well-based economic and project management knowledge

Civil Engineers Technical Association (CETA)

Civil Engineers Technical Association (CETA) is a students’ body for conducting activities on career development, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills of students. It organizes Seminars, Quizzes, Industrial Visits, Paper / Poster Presentations, Group Discussions, Guest Lectures, Career Guidance, Model-making Competitions, Design Challenges etc. under its auspices.

Student Chapters of various professional bodies like Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS), Indian Road Congress (IRC), and Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) provide unique opportunities for networking, mentoring, and bonding over common professional interests.

With an objective of helping students to pursue their hobbies and interests and to bring people together, the student clubs are created at the Institute. Students of Civil Engineering are initiated Engineering Clinics with an aim of nurturing surveying challenges, model-making competitions, design contests, project exhibitions, sustainable construction and smart infrastructure activities. e-Designing and Marketing Club (e-DAM) focuses on cutting-edge skills through platforms like BIM modeling, AutoCAD drafting, construction project documentation, digital marketing, and technical content creation related to Civil Engineering.

M.Tech (Structural Engineering)

M.Tech (Structural Engineering) is a two-year full time post graduate program approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for the students who have B.E/B. Tech in Civil Engineering. The department offers full time M.Tech program in Structural Engineering with an intake of 18, selected through GATE / TS PGECET.

The course offers core subjects like Advanced Structural Analysis, Advanced Solid Mechanics, Finite Element Analysis and Structural Dynamics etc.

The program Structural engineering ensures the structures are safe, stable and don’t collapse under applied loads. It is mainly focused on analysis and design of the structure. Structural engineers are responsible for designing and constructing physical structures that people use every day. They are experts in ensuring that structures like buildings, bridges and tunnels are both useful and safe.
