Handbook - Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering

"Building the future,
on a foundation of excellence"
Civil Engineers build the world’s infrastructure, which encompasses Railways, Highways, Bridges, Water-works, Skyscrapers, Canals, Wharves, Industrial Buildings, Rapid Transit Systems, Power Plants etc. They deal with the design, construction, maintenance, and repair of structures. There are galore opportunities for civil engineers, with new players entering the market and more large-scale developments announced around the globe. Civil Engineers play a very important role in improving the living standards of a society in the form of Structural Engineers, Transportation Engineers, Water Resources, and Environmental Engineers, Hydrologists, Geologists and Geotechnical Experts.

The department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2008 with B.Tech program in Civil Engineering. The M. Tech program in Structural Engineering was started in the year 2014.

B.Tech program in Civil Engineering was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) successively two terms in 2016 and 2019 for three years each.

Civil Engineering branch has a lot of diversified fields such as Surveying, Geotechnical Engineering Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Hydraulics, Transportation and Hydrology & Water Resources Engineering. The primary responsibility of any Civil Engineer is to provide various facilities and build necessary infrastructure to meet all social needs. Shelter, drinking water, and waste water management, as well as the movement of people and products via various forms of transportation such as roads, railways, Airways & Urban Transportation Systems, Management of Water Resources through Dams & Reservoirs are addressed by a Civil Engineer. Communication, Organizational, Leadership and Decision making skills are very important to civil engineer as every infrastructure projects requires huge man power and team management. Key skills that differentiates a Civil Engineer from others are emotional intelligence and Creativity with societal responsibility

The main objective of department is to provide:

1. Industry Standard Facilities
2. Field Visits
3. Employability

The department has well-equipped laboratory facilities like Computer Aided Engineering Drawing, Programming for Problem Solving, Engineering Geology, Surveying and Geomatics, Concrete Technology, Hydraulics and Hydraulic Machinery, Strength of Materials, Advanced Surveying, Advanced Material Testing, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Advanced Structural Design and also has one research laboratory as Advanced Concrete Research and Innovation Center (ACRIC) which is a nexus for improving the performance of concrete by infusing with ingenious materials and industrial waste and thereby decreasing the overall cement utility. The research center incorporates green building initiatives and reduction of drudgery by harnessing the salvaged resources from industrial and residential detritus.

In order to make teaching effective and interesting, the students are nurtured with a variety of learning activities including and not restricted to class room teaching, presentations, video lectures, MOOC courses, minor / honours courses, experiential learning (ExL) and online courses by faculty in the institute and across the globe.

The students are encouraged to learn advanced computing technologies to increase their core competency in the ever-growing market scenario as a complimentary technology for the core engineering knowledge. Also, advanced research software like Rivet, StaadPro etc., is taught in college premises by inviting experts from industries to impart their knowledge. The students are supported to go for full semester internships across the globe to various partner institutes to improve their prospects post their completion of graduate degree.

M.Tech (Structural Engineering)

M.Tech (Structural Engineering) is a two-year full time post graduate program approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for the students who have B.E/B. Tech in Civil Engineering. The department offers full time M.Tech program in Structural Engineering with an intake of 18, selected through GATE / TS PGECET.

The course offers core subjects like Advanced Structural Analysis, Advanced Solid Mechanics, Finite Element Analysis and Structural Dynamics etc.

The program Structural engineering ensures the structures are safe, stable and don’t collapse under applied loads. It is mainly focused on analysis and design of the structure. Structural engineers are responsible for designing and constructing physical structures that people use every day. They are experts in ensuring that structures like buildings, bridges and tunnels are both useful and safe.
