The department of Aeronautical Engineering is indeed a core and cornerstone department of the institute and was established in the year 2000 with B.Tech program in Aeronautical Engineering. The M.Tech program in Aerospace Engineering (ASE) was started in the year 2008. Since its inception, combines hands-on research, engaging faculty and top of the line facilities to provide students with the best education and continues to place great emphasis on problem solving and design based upon the traditions of the institute. The department has a recognized Research Centre under Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad and conducts Ph.D programs in Aeronautical Engineering since 2024.
The B.Tech Program in Aeronautical Engineering was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) successively for five consecutive terms in 2008, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022. The period of validity for B.Tech program in Aeronautical Engineering in Tier-I is till 30 June, 2025 and M.Tech program in Aerospace Engineering is till 30 June, 2026.
Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defence systems, and Aerospace exploration, often specializing in areas such as aerodynamics, aerospace propulsion, aerospace structures, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, or production methods. Department offers a vibrant academic atmosphere which enables independent research and free exchange of ideas. The department has continuous interaction with R&D organizations of international repute in the field of aerospace engineering that lead to mutually beneficial research activities.
The main objective of the department is to develop professionals by providing
i) Classroom Training:
Students with aerospace engineering education of the highest quality, that will enable them to reach their maximum potential in a technological world, significantly advance knowledge, its applications and integration in aerospace related disciplines and Industrial automation tools for better understanding of how the theory they have learnt links to real scenarios.
The faculty adopt the latest teaching aids like digital display and interfacing units, platforms like Information and Communication Technology (ICT), MOOCs, publishing digital content though various platforms like YouTube, animations in the classroom in order to make teaching effective and interesting. Faculty are encouraged to produced video lectures of each course known as Early Learning Readiness Videos (ELRV) to enhance learning before they come to class. Also, students are exposed to virtual classroom for additional technical content.
ii) Employability:
A blend of aerospace system design with computing continues to be among the most employable in the country, 90% employment with average starting salaries of Rs. 4.5 lakhs.
The department gives its full support to the students so that they turn out to be the best engineers with flying colours in their lives. The department provides the perfect ground and wider horizon to pursue their career in core and other IT related streams through various skill development activities. The placement record of the department has always been impressive. Students of the department are offered remarkable placements through on / off campus selection. Many students are getting opportunities in the PSUs, national / international institutes and laboratories for research and higher studies.
The department has well-equipped laboratory facilities like Computer Aided Engineering Drawing, Programming for Problem Solving, Fluid Dynamics, Mechanics of Solids, Aerospace Structures, Aerodynamics and Propulsion, Aircraft Production Technology, Computer Aided Aircraft Production Drawing, Computational Structure, Computational Aerodynamics, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Flight Vehicle Design, Aerospace Structural Dynamics etc. are available with the department to carry out experiments and research activities. The infrastructure and lab facilities are upgraded from time to time and provide good practical learning and innovative environment for the students and researchers.
M. Tech (Aerospace Engineering)
M.Tech (Aerospace Engineering) is a two year full time post-graduate program approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for the students who have a B.E / B.Tech in Mechanical / Aeronautical / Aerospace / Marine Engineering / Mechatronics / Naval Architecture / AMIE in Mechanical. The department offers full time M.Tech program in Aerospace Engineering with an intake of 6, selected through GATE / TS PGECET.
The course offers core subjects like Engineering Analysis of Flight Vehicles, Mathematical Modelling, Flight Vehicle Structures, Air Transportation & Space Transportation Systems and Computational Approaches for Structures & Aerodynamics.
A dedicated project work is taken up by every student for two semesters during second year. The project work is aimed at high quality standards used in current industry practices. Some Project works are also supported by leading MNCs and defence laboratories involved in state of art research and development.
