Aeronautical Engineering

"When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it" - Henry Ford

The department of Aeronautical Engineering is indeed a core and cornerstone department of the institute and was established in the year 2000 with B.Tech program in Aeronautical Engineering. The M.Tech program in Aerospace Engineering (ASE) was started in the year 2008. Since its inception, combines hands-on research, engaging faculty and top of the line facilities to provide students with the best education and continues to place great emphasis on problem solving and design based upon the traditions of the institute. The department has a recognized Research Centre under Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad and conducts Ph.D programs in Aeronautical Engineering since 2024.

The B.Tech Program in Aeronautical Engineering was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) successively for six consecutive terms in 2008, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025. The period of NBA accreditation validity for B.Tech program in Aeronautical Engineering in Tier-I (Washington Accord) is till 30 June, 2028 and M.Tech program in Aerospace Engineering is till 30 June, 2026.

Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defence systems, and Aerospace exploration, often specializing in areas such as aerodynamics, aerospace propulsion, aerospace structures, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, or production methods. Department offers a vibrant academic atmosphere which enables independent research and free exchange of ideas. The department has continuous interaction with R&D organizations of international repute in the field of aerospace engineering that lead to mutually beneficial research activities.

The students are nurtured with a variety of active learning activities including and not restricted to classroom teaching, presentations, video lectures, MOOC courses, minor / honors courses, experiential learning (ExEED), and online courses delivered by faculty in the institute and across the globe.

Skills and Competences:

Considering the potential expertise, an Aeronautical Engineering B.Tech graduate should have at least four or more of the following competences:

  • Be aware of the tasks involved in the design, analysis, and manufacturing of aircraft and aerospace systems.
  • Apply practical engineering methods in aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, materials, and flight mechanics through laboratory and hands-on experiments.
  • Solve complex aerospace engineering problems using industry-standard design codes, analytical techniques, and simulation tools.
  • Perform wind tunnel testing, structural testing, propulsion experiments, and flight simulation for validation and performance evaluation
  • Design and analyse aircraft structures, aerodynamic components, propulsion systems, UAVs, and aerospace mechanisms using computational tools such as CAD/CATIA/ANSYS/CFD software.
  • Plan, manage, and monitor UAV operations, and aerospace project workflows with adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
  • Provide solutions considering flight safety, fuel efficiency, sustainability, emerging aviation technologies, and environmental impact.
  • Think logically, creatively, systematically
  • Have well-based economic and project management knowledge

The Aeronautical Engineers Technical Association (AETA) is the official student body of the Aeronautical Engineering Department, dedicated to career development and the overall personality enhancement of students. AETA regularly conducts and other professional activities.,>

Student chapters of reputed professional bodies such as the give students access to unique opportunities for networking, mentoring, industry exposure, and professional growth.

To nurture creativity, innovation, and teamwork, the Institute hosts several student clubs. Aeronautical Engineering students actively engage in Engineering Clinics, focusing on aircraft structural model-making, UAV design challenges, wind tunnel experiments, flight simulation activities, project exhibitions, and hands-on workshops in core aerospace areas.

The Aero Design and Simulation Club (Aero-DSC) helps students gain industry-ready skills in CATIA, ANSYS, SolidWorks, CFD simulation tools, flight simulation platforms and digital content creation related to aircraft design, aerospace systems, and emerging aviation technologies.

M. Tech (Aerospace Engineering)

M.Tech (Aerospace Engineering) is a two year full time post-graduate program approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for the students who have a B.E / B.Tech in Mechanical / Aeronautical / Aerospace / Marine Engineering / Mechatronics / Naval Architecture / AMIE in Mechanical. The department offers full time M.Tech program in Aerospace Engineering with an intake of 6, selected through GATE / TS PGECET.

The course offers core subjects like Aerodynamics for Practical Applications, Jet and Rocket Propulsion, Flight Dynamics and Control, Aircraft Structural Mechanics, Missile Aerodynamics and Flight Simulation.

A dedicated project work is taken up by every student for two semesters during second year. The project work is aimed at high quality standards used in current industry practices. Some Project works are also supported by leading MNCs and defence laboratories involved in state of art research and development.
